DRM 393 - Exploration of Ballroom Dancing

Credit Hours: 3
Prerequisite: permission. Students must register with a partner. Long before dance became a complex art, people delighted in swaying, circling, and stamping out rhythms. People have danced for the purposes of ritual, as well as religious ceremony. This course will emphasize the origin and development of social dance as a means of expression, recreation and entertainment. We will study the social, cultural, and political implications that shaped the various styles of “modern ballroom dance,” such as the Waltz, Fox Trot, Tango, Mambo, Samba, Cha-Cha and Swing, as well as learn the proper techniques for these styles of social dance.
