Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science
Students completing the theatre major will:
- develop an appreciation for and knowledge of several areas of theatre including stage movement, vocal training, acting, dancing, stagecraft, design, directing, playwriting, theatre history, and script analysis (Academic);
- acquire experience in performance and technical theatre and develop a strong work ethic that prepares them for postgraduate education or successful professional employment (Vocational);
- recognize the human desire for creativity instilled by God and be able to apply a Christian worldview to the tasks of reading, writing, interpreting, and performing drama (Christian);
- cultivate an appreciation for our nation’s invaluable liberties, which are guaranteed by the Constitution and Bill of Rights, particularly the freedom of expression available to those in the performing arts (Patriotic);
- develop an appreciation for the performing arts, their collaborative processes, and their positive contributions in both historical and contemporary society (Cultural).
The specific learning outcomes connected to the objectives above are that students will:
- successfully complete the departmental curriculum as required for the various major tracks, maintain a minimum of a 2.0 GPA in order to be eligible to participate in department productions, and avoid any type of probation (Academic);
- participate in the theatre department work program for a minimum of two semesters - both majors and minors should successfully complete the work program as indicated through successful work grades. Students are also encouraged to enroll and successfully complete theatre practicum courses (Vocational);
- experience a variety of creative processes in particular courses that allow the demonstration of Christian commitment and a Christian worldview (DRM 223 Dramatic Structure and Analysis, DRM 323 Playwriting, DRM 373 Acting I, DRM 413 Music Theatre Dance III, DRM 443 Directing I, DRM 453 Directing II, and DRM 463 Acting II) (Christian);
- survey literature, culture, and patriotic themes found in the performing arts (DRM 333 History of Western Theatre and DRM 363 Music Theatre History) (Patriotic);
- explore the variety of roles and creative processes in the theatre and the performing arts, and experience artistic events and activities (Cultural).
Core courses required of all General Emphasis, Music Theatre Emphasis, and Drama Ministry Emphasis: 18 credit hours
Required major courses: 36 credit hours
A minor in Music Vocal Perfomance is required of this emphasis.
Music Vocal Performance Minor
Minor in Vocal Performance: 25 credit hours
Ensembles: 4 credit hours (MUE)
Choose from the following ensembles:
- MUE 111/311 - Chapel Choir
- MUE 121/321 - Chorale
- MUE 181/381 - Music Theatre Workshop
Culminating recital: 1 credit hour
The student will be placed in the appropriate class piano course based on his/her entering skill level and will continue through the course sequence until Class Piano IV. Students will receive credit for any Class Piano courses they test out of.
