Attendance Policy

Attendance Expectations

The College places a high priority on punctuality and attendance expectations. Every student is expected to fulfill his/her commitment to attend class and work, regardless of day or time. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action.

Officially Excused Absences

Students will be responsible to communicate all absences to their professor(s) and/or work supervisor(s). Excused absences are granted for students participating in officially sanctioned College activities or death in the family absences. The names of students who are frequently absent from classes and/or work will be reported to the respective administrative office(s). Continued absenteeism or substandard performance may constitute grounds for dismissal.

Medical Related Absence

The student is responsible to communicate all medical related absences with their professor(s) and/or work supervisor(s).  The Armstrong McDonald Clinic does not provide routine written medical excuses for short-term absences from class or work due to illness or injury.

College of the Ozarks Policy on Academic and Work Education Excused Absences for Illness

Core Value: Steward Faithfully the mission, vision, goals, and resources (people and time) of College of the Ozarks.

Policy Statement: To ensure that student well-being and educational priorities are balanced with the needs of the Academic and Work Education Programs, College of the Ozarks has established the following policy regarding student excused absences due to illness.

Purpose: This policy aims to establish guidelines for determining excused absences within the Academic and Work Education Programs.

Scope: This policy applies to all students (full-time, part-time, residential, commuter, etc.) registered for classes at College of the Ozarks or working in the Work Education Program to help cover the cost of education at College of the Ozarks.

Policy Details:

Reasons for Excusal: Fever (100.4°F or higher) or flu-like symptoms: According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), individuals should be excused if they have a fever, which is a sign of a contagious illness.

Gastrointestinal issues (vomiting, diarrhea): Individuals should limit interactions with others to avoid exposure. In addition, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Food Code specifically requires food handlers to be excluded from work if they experience vomiting or diarrhea to prevent contamination of food products.

Contagious conditions (e.g., strep throat, influenza, COVID-19): The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the CDC both advise that individuals with contagious diseases should stay home to avoid the spread of illness.

Additional Conditions/Issues: Any issues affecting the student’s ability to perform essential duties or to function safely.

Considerations for Excusals: Students will only be excused if they are unable to attend any other activity or event (e.g., class, chapel) for at least the 24-hour period following the beginning of an absence (e.g., student notifies professor/supervisor that they will not be able to attend an 8 am class/shift. If the student attends a different event before 8 am the next morning, the absence from work or class will not be excused). Attendance at another activity or event within the 24-hour period will result in the absence being unexcused.

Students who miss scheduled classes or work the day before or the day after a college break (e.g., Thanksgiving break), except for one of the “Reasons for Excusal” above, will be required to meet with the Provost and/or Dean of Work Education.

Notification Requirements: Students should contact their professor and/or work supervisor via phone, email, or in person, according to the professor/supervisor’s preferred method of communication and in accordance with the professor/supervisor’s timeframe requirements.

Documentation: Complete the following form. Professors and work supervisors may request additional documentation (e.g., doctor’s note) for extended illnesses or frequent absences equal to 3 or more days in a given semester. If a note is required, students must provide the documentation at their next class or worked shift or it will be unexcused.

Compliance: Excessive absences or failure to follow the notification policy may result in disciplinary action.

Approval: This policy has been approved by the Provost and the Dean of Work Education at College of the Ozarks
