The pre-dietetics program does not require the student to complete any particular major. Although the majority of applicants will have majored in Applied Nutrition, those admitted to dietetics graduate programs come from all majors, including the humanities and social sciences. Pre-dietetics majors may need to take extra courses beyond the minimum needed to graduate. Applied Nutrition and science majors may take extra courses in the humanities; students with other majors may need to take additional science courses. All pre-dietetics students should emphasize a balanced liberal arts education that includes coursework in the humanities, social sciences, and philosophy.
Students should strive to prepare themselves for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), maintain a high grade point average, work and volunteer in situations where they will enhance both hard and soft skills used in dietetics practice, and demonstrate good time management skills by active involvement in community service and extracurricular activities such as clubs and student government.
Below is a list of courses many dietetics programs require students to complete prior to admission. Since these requirements vary slightly for different schools, students are urged to investigate the specific requirements for the graduate dietetics program they wish to attend. The Applied Nutrition major or Human and Molecular Biology major, if taken in combination with the recommended additional courses, will fulfill the prerequisites of most dietetics programs.
