General Information:

The student majoring in communication arts at College of the Ozarks will:
- acquire knowledge of the principles and theories underlying the study of communication and assess the appropriate application of these theories (Academic);
- learn how to employ words and images to fulfill the calling God places on each of our lives (Vocational);
- develop an understanding that “all on the side of truth” listen to Jesus (John 18:37) and represent the incarnate Word in their communication (Christian);
- appreciate the communicative freedoms and responsibilities guaranteed by the American Constitution, and understand how citizens can employ them to improve our nation (Patriotic);
- realize the power that words and images can have in shaping understandings of the world, and commit to using them for the good (Cultural).
The communication arts degree prepares students for today’s diverse and evolving business, professional, and academic fields. This major consists of five emphases: journalism, public relations, radio production, speech communication and video production. Each emphasis will enhance students’ critical thinking, communication and field-specific technology skills.
A student may not major in more than one emphasis in communication arts. Students majoring in speech communication or public relations may not minor in speech communication.
Requirements:
Core courses required of all Communication Arts Majors: 15 credit hours
One of the following: 3 credit hours
General Education courses specified by the major: 6 credit hours
Required major courses: 21-24 credit hours
Required collateral courses: 12 credit hours
One of the following: 3 credit hours
Additional Requirements:
Maintain a 2.0 GPA in Communication Arts core courses and courses within major area of emphasis. |
