Core courses required of all Music majors: 12-16 credit hours
Note:
The student will be placed in the appropriate class piano course based on his/her entering skill level and will continue through the course sequence until Class Piano IV. Applied Music Requirements:
All music majors are required to declare a major performing instrument and take a minimum of two semesters of upper division applied music of their major instrument (for piano majors the major performing instrument is piano). Declaration must be made at or before the passing of Sophomore proficiency or completion of 45 credit hours. To be granted permission for upper division status, students must successfully pass all portions of the Sophomore proficiency and must have prior approval of a faculty jury. All declared music majors are required to be enrolled in the major performing ensemble of their declared major instrument every full-time semester except during student teaching. Piano majors may fulfill this requirement by participating in any of the major ensembles. Courses in Applied Music (MUA)
Instruction is available to all students in piano, organ, voice, strings, brass, woodwinds, guitar and percussion and may be repeated for credit. Beginning students are encouraged to enroll in class instruction (piano, voice, and/or guitar). Auditions and/or permission is required for students who request applied lessons. Students who enroll for applied lessons must register for 100/200 level, unless otherwise specified by the instructor. Students who wish to enroll for 300/400 level lessons must have prior approval of a faculty jury. Courses in Ensembles (MUE)
Ensembles are open to all qualified students in the College and may be repeated for credit. Freshmen and Sophomores enroll in the 100 level courses. Juniors and Seniors enroll in 300 level courses. MUE credits may be used to satisfy G.E. requirements. Five of the ensembles are designated major performing ensembles (Maj). Sophomore Proficiency:
The Sophomore Proficiency is determined by faculty conference at mid-term of the fall semester concurrent with students taking MUS 213 - Music Theory II . It is an assessment of the student’s ability to fulfill the music major at a level of competence deemed feasible for success.
